Opel Astra OPC confirmed for Australia – on sale 2013

Opel Australia has confirmed the most powerful Astra will be joining the Australian line up from early 2013 (read our review of the Astra OPC here).

The Renaultsport Megane RS265 rivalling Opel Astra OPC (Opel Performance Centre) will make its local debut at the upcoming 2012 Australian International Motor Show later this month.

Powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder direct injection engine, the Astra OPC packs 206kW of power and 400Nm of torque, enough to sling shot the sporty coupé from 0-100km/h in just 6.0 seconds.

“Australia has a long history of, and passion, for performance vehicles. Since launch we’ve continually been asked if and when OPC is coming and we are very excited to confirm that the Astra OPC will be in Sydney next week and will be available in our showrooms next year,” said Opel Australia’s Managing Director, Bill Mott.

The top of the range Astra is differentiated from its lesser siblings by unique sculpted front and rear bumpers, side skirts, an aerodynamic roof spoiler and twin exhaust pipes in a trapezoid shape.

Inside, a new flat bottom OPC steering wheel that is 10mm smaller in diameter and front sports bucket seats made of lightweight material emphasise the sporty nature of the car.

To tame the 400Nm of torque sent to the front wheels, Opel has specially developed a mechanical limited slip differential and sophisticated HiPerStrut suspension for the Astra OPC. The high performance coupé also benefit from the addition of cross-drilled and ventilated 355mm front Brembo brakes clamped by four-piston callipers and Opel’s fully adaptive FlexRide damping system.

Australian pricing and specification will be announced closer to launch.
