For over five decades, the BMW 3 Series has defined the core of what BMW stands for — sporty driving dynamics, timeless design, and continuous innovation. Each generation has built on that legacy, refining the formula while staying true to its roots. Now, the arrival of the fully electric BMW i3 marks a significant new chapter, blending the familiar character of the 3 Series with a host of new technologies and capabilities.
As the second model in BMW’s Neue Klasse lineup after the iX3, the i3 represents a major technological leap into the brand’s electric future. Launching initially as the i3 50 xDrive, it features a dual-motor setup with an electric motor on both the front and rear axles. Here are the top 5 things to know about the i3.
1. Powerful dual-motor performance
The launch model, the BMW i3 50 xDrive, features a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup producing 345 kW and 645 Nm. This places it firmly in high-performance territory for an electric sedan, promising strong acceleration and confident traction in all conditions. A 0–100 km/h sprint time of under four seconds is expected, reinforcing its performance credentials. Combined with BMW’s latest eDrive technology, the i3 aims to deliver not just speed but also smooth, responsive power delivery.
2. Class-leading driving range and ultra-fast charging
The i3 is set to shake up the electric sedan segment with an ultra-long driving range and super-fast charging capability. Its claimed range of up to 900 km (WLTP), is best in class. Combined with ultra-fast 400 kW DC charging, capable of adding around 400 km of range in just 10 minutes, it addresses two of the biggest concerns EV buyers have: range anxiety and charging time. For long-distance drivers, this could be a game changer.
3. Advanced next-generation technology
The i3 introduces several new technologies, including BMW’s Panoramic iDrive and the powerful “Heart of Joy” computing system, which processes driving inputs up to 10 times faster than before. A standout feature is the BMW Panoramic Vision, which projects information across the entire lower section of the windscreen from A-pillar to A-pillar. This is complemented by a 17.9-inch central touchscreen, an optional 3D head-up display, and a multifunction steering wheel with Shy Tech controls, where buttons illuminate only when the corresponding functions are available. Together with BMW Symbiotic Drive – an AI-powered driving assistance system, these features signal a major leap forward in in-car technology and user experience.
4. Familiar 3 Series design with a bold new direction
Despite being fully electric, the i3 retains classic 3 Series proportions, including a long wheelbase, short overhangs, and a sporty stance. Unlike the BMW i4, BMW’s closest-sized EV, the i3 sticks with the traditional sedan shape that defines the 3 Series heritage. However, BMW has taken a more adventurous approach to styling this time, with sharper lines and a more futuristic look. The redesigned kidney grille, in particular, is likely to become a major talking point among enthusiasts and buyers alike.
5. Bidirectional power transfer
Beyond performance, the i3 offers practical benefits such as bidirectional charging (Vehicle-to-Load, Vehicle-to-Home, and Vehicle-to-Grid), allowing it to power external devices or even supply energy back to a home. Production will begin in Munich in 2026, with Australian deliveries expected in 2027, positioning it as a key part of BMW’s transition to an all-electric future.
