Full-sized LEGO bricks McLaren 720S hits Goodwood Festival

McLaren is set to introduce a super rare McLaren 720S at the Goodwood festival, one swapping its lightweight aluminium and carbon-fibre body with LEGO bricks.

The model is made out of more than 280,000 LEGO bricks and tips the scale at no less than 1.6 tonnes – significantly more than the road-going 720S’s 1,283kg dry weight.

However, the 1:1 scale model will arrive at the Goodwood stand incomplete, with visitors to the McLaren stand required to help finish the car off by the end of the Festival of Speed by placing the orange McLaren bricks in designated parts of the car.

In order to produce the highly accurate model, McLaren worked closely with the Speed Champions LEGO team based in Billund, Denmark, and provided them with in-depth vehicle CAD data so that the model could be fully realised.

The model was built up around a steel frame, with a team of six working for over 2,000 hours to build the car by hand. For comparison, a real-world production 720S takes around 12 working days in the McLaren Production Centre to assemble.

Also features on the LEGO 720S is the all-new Pirelli P Zero CORSA tyre used in its road-going equivalent, complete with silver ‘Pirelli Colour Edition’ graphics.

The road-going McLaren 720S is available in Australia priced from $489,900 plus on-road costs.
