MINI Vision provides a glimpse into the brand’s future styling

MINI has previewed its future styling at the Mini Design@Home event with the aptly named Vision. You’d probably be scratching your heads now to spot the difference compared to today’s MINI, of which aren’t overly obvious.

There’s the hexagonal grille which has been a MINI feature since the first model from 1959, classic MINI proportions and silhouette and a wrapped around glasshouse. The Vision’s elliptical full-LED headlights and side indicator element are also unquestionably MINI. All these elements are united using a lightweight material called “Organo metal” – a strong and extremely moldable material acting as a link between them.

At the back, familiar design elements such as the rectangular taillights and twin centrally-exiting exhaust dominate.

Aerodynamics played a key role in the development of the Vision, elements of which can be found on the aerodynamic air intake and outlet around each front wheel arch, airflow-optimised wheel rims and exterior mirrors, and a roof spoiler.

What the Vision brings that is potentially game changing is interactive gadgets such as the Driving Experience Control, which allows the entire interior to be transformed into a variety of different colour and experience worlds in the blink of an eye. The car also features a transparent and open cockpit, door trim in the form of the Union Jack and a “floating” centre console.

Unveiled by Head of Mini Design, Anders Warming, the presentation of the MINI Vision is based around a virtual 3D hologram, a practice which allows designers to put their creative ideas to the test, quickly and under realistic conditions.

Although created as a pointer to MINI’s future styling direction, the Vision isn’t a preview of the next-generation MINI which is due next year.
