A turbocharged version of Volvo’s S60 sedan is being trialed by the ACT Police as a potential addition to its car fleet.

Volvo Car Australia has loaned an S60 T6 R-Design all-wheel drive sedan to the ACT Policing Traffic Operations fleet which is evaluating the S60 its suitability for use as a police vehicle. The turbocharged 3.0-litre six-cylinder S60 T6 R-Design can reach 100 km/h from standstill in just 5.7 seconds.

The Officer in Charge of Traffic Operations, Sergeant Rod Anderson, said the extended trial would enable a full assessment of the S60’s capabilities.

“Police vehicles are required to perform to a high level in dynamic, high stress environments. By doing this trial we can obtain direct feedback from our officers on how the S60 performs under various driving conditions. We are particularly interested in our officers’ opinions on the all-wheel drive capability of the S60 and what advantages it offers over our current rear-wheel drive fleet.”

Volvo Car Australia Managing Director, Kevin McCann, said: “Volvo has a proven track record in supplying highway surveillance and rapid response vehicles to police forces around the world, including Sweden, Belgium, The Netherlands, Switzerland and the UK.

“The S60 T6 R-Design is a high performance sedan with a range of active and passive safety features such as Adaptive Cruise Control with Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection to protect both drivers and other road users. We look forward to working closely with ACT Police to assess the S60’s suitability to meet its operational requirements.”

It is not the first time Volvo has supplied vehicles to the boys in blue, as the NSW Police force also received a Volvo S60 Polestar last year for use as a support vehicle within the community liaison division.
