Hyundai’s new fourth-generation Santa Fe SUV has arrived Down Under, promising class-leading active safety features, interior space and functionality, packaged in a family-friendly style.
The seven-seat Santa Fe is available in three trim levels – Active, Elite and Highlander – and come standard with Hyundai’s SmartSense active safety suite and the HTRAC all-wheel drive system.
Customers can choose from two drivetrains in the Active – a 2.4-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine with a six-speed automatic transmission and a turbocharged diesel engine matched to a new, eight-speed automatic transmission.
The 2.4 petrol engine is available in the entry-level Santa Fe Active and produces 138kW at 6,000rpm and 241Nm at 4,000rpm. Teamed with a six-speed automatic transmission it uses 9.3L/100km on the official combined cycle.
The 2.2-litre CRDi turbo-diesel engine is available across all three Santa Fe trim grades. It delivers 147kW at 3,800rpm and 440Nm from 1,750 to 2,750rpm.
Measuring 4,770mm in length, 1,890mm in width and sitting on a 2,765mm wheelbase, the new model is larger in almost every direction and promises more comfort for its passengers. Hyundai says rear visibility has improved by up to 41 percent thanks to larger rear quarter glass.
On the styling front, Hyundai has gone upmarket with its fourth-generation Santa Fe, which is characterised by a wide stance and athletic look. The front introduces Hyundai’s Cascading Grille complemented by the twin headlamps first seen on the smaller Kona.
Inside, driver and front passengers get electrically extendable seat cushions offering 10 different positions, while second row legroom has increased by 38mm and the seat is 18mm higher. Headroom in the third row has also been improved by 22mm. Luggage capacity is rated at 625 litres.
Like the rest of the industry, the 2019 Santa Fe boasts advanced safety technologies as part of Hyundai’s SmartSense active safety and driving assistance systems.
In an industry first, the Rear Occupant Alert monitors the alert the driver there are still passengers in the rear seats when leaving the car. the Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Avoidance Assist – a Hyundai first – not only warns the driver of approaching vehicles from the rear side, but also applies the brakes automatically. The Safety Exist Assist prevents accidents by sensing when vehicles approach from behind by temporarily locking the doors before being opened, so that passengers can exit the car safely.
Other safety technologies include Forward Collision Avoidance Assist with pedestrian detection, Lane Keep Assist and Blind Spot Collision Warning.
Feature highlights include an 8-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, head-up display and wireless inductive charging for mobile phones.
