Volkswagen’s hot hatch onslaught continues in Australia, with the company launching the cut price Golf R Grid Edition.
Available in December, the model is unique to Australia with its name and badge coined internally at Volkswagen Australia.
Priced from $47,490 for the manual hatchback, $49,990 with DSG and $51,990 for the Wagon (DSG only), the Grid Edition brings the flourishing R range to its lowest prices to date.

It retains the 213kW/380Nm 2.0 litres turbo engine, 4MOTION and seven speed DSG of more expensive R variants, but loses the normal car’s leather seats (instead getting ‘Race’ sports cloth and Alcantara combination upholstery), 9.2-inch screen (replaced with 8.0-inch) and Active Info Display. Outside, it can be distinguished via black door mirrors and roof rails for the Wagon.
With the recent release of the Golf R hatchback, availability this month of Golf R Wolfsburg limited editions in hatch and Wagon, plus the permanent return in January of the “standard” Golf R Wagon, there has never been a wider choice of the Volkswagen’s range-topping performance car.
