With cross-town rival Bentley recently teasing their upcoming SUV, it is only natural that Rolls-Royce is also mulling their own SUV.

During a recent interview, BMW board member who is in charge of Rolls-Royce, Peter Schwarzenbauer told Top Gear: “There are long-term independent studies that say half the world car market – 50 percent of everything – will be crossovers and SUVs. So it’s our responsibility to look into it. We are seriously analysing a Rolls-Royce in the SUV area.”

Like the discussions which were had at BMW and Porsche before they made the X5 and Cayenne, the bosses at Rolls-Royce has a big question to answer. Will it fit to the Rolls-Royce brand?

“We have to know it would still be a true Rolls-Royce. If we’re not convinced it is, then I will not ask the board for permission to go forward with it,” said Schwarzenbauer.

The next question management has to decide on is whether to utilise BMW’s existing SUV platform (X5?) or engineer a completely new one for Rolls-Royce.
