Mercedes-Benz is reportedly working on a high performance non-AMG C-Class to be called the C450 AMG Sport (C-Class AMG Sport pictured). The rival to the likes of Audi S4 and BMW 335i M Sport will slot below the range topping C63 AMG, due to be released late this year.

According to British press AutoCar, the new C-Class variant will arrive in 2015 spotting an updated 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 under the bonnet. Power is expected to be in the region of 274 kW (367 hp), driving the rear wheels. It’s a far cry from the 373 kW / 610 Nm bahn-storming C63 AMG, but the hot C-Class will be in a much better proposition in terms of value.

Unlike the rear-drive-only C63 AMG, the C450 AMG Sport will also be available with the optional 4MATIC all-wheel-drive. At this stage, we expect the performance model to only come in a sedan body, but both wagon and coupe body shapes are likely to be in the cards.
