It seems the days of the Volkswagen Golf R as the ultimate Golf is numbered. According to an Auto Express report, Volkswagen is planning to introduce a “more extreme” version of the Golf R at the Beijing Motor Show in April.
Likely to be called the Volkswagen Golf R Evo, a company insider told the publication the concept will be a stripped down version of the R, with the rear seats replaced with a roll-cage, along with thinner bucket seats and lightweight alloy wheels.
The concept will also swap the normal steel roof with a lightweight carbon fibre roof, while the same material will also be used on sections of the bodywork.
Under the bonnet, the Golf R’s 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that develops 221kW (300HP) and 380Nm is expected to receive a slight increase in power to all four wheels via a Haldex 4MOTION system.
A production model bearing the same name is likely but we will have to wait till April to learn more.
