2014 Volkswagen Golf R revealed – with 221kW

Volkswagen has revealed the 2014 Golf R following a teaser photo yesterday. The car will make its public debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month.

The range-topping Golf is motivated by the latest-generation 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine shared with the Golf GTI, but tweaked to deliver 221kW (300HP) and 380Nm of torque. That’s 22kW more to the wheels compared to its predecessor. The power is delivered between 5,500 – 6,200rpm, while peak torque is accessible from 1,800 – 5,500rpm.

The engine has been modified to include new cylinder heads, exhaust valves, valve seats and springs, turbocharger, high-pressure injection valves and pistons. Power is channelled to a 4MOTION all-wheel drive system via a fifth-generation Haldex coupling through a six-speed manual transmission.

The Golf R will sprint from 0 – 100km/h in just 5.1 seconds or 4.9 seconds when paired with the optional six-speed twin-clutch DSG gearbox. Top speed is electronically limited to 250km/h.

Fuel consumption has also come in for massive improvement, with the manual consuming 7.1L/100km and DSG returning 6.9L/100km. meanwhile, CO2 emission is rated at 165g/km and 159g/km for the manual and DSG, respectively.

The latest Golf R sits 5mm lower compared to the Golf GTI, and rolls on 18-inch alloy wheels as standard, with 19-inch available as an option. Like its GTI sibling, the Golf R sits on MacPherson front suspension and an improved multi-link rear setup. Adaptive dampers will be available as an option.

As expected, the 2014 Golf R gets a more aggressive body kit, with large air intakes and lower side sills. It also sports satin chrome wing mirror caps, a la Audi RS. At the back, there are LED taillights and chrome quad exhaust pipes that sandwich a rear diffuser. The R will get bi-xenon headlights with twin LED daytime running lights and LED indicators as standard.

Inside, the sport seats are upholstered in a combination of cloth and Alcantara with carbon-like leather. The speedometer tops out at 320km/h and an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system is likely to be standard.

The 2014 Volkswagen Golf R will go on sale in Germany in the fourth quarter of this year priced from €38,325. Australia will likely receive our first shipment in the middle of 2014. More photos to follow in the next few days.
