BMW updates 2 Series Coupe and Convertible range

BMW has updated the 2 Series Coupe and Convertible range with improved specification, greater efficiency and stronger performance.

Slotting into the range is the 230i, supplanting the 228i and sitting above the familiar – though updated – 220i nameplate. The previous diesel-powered 220d will no longer be available.

The updated 2 Series range is highlighted by the arrival of the potent M240i, which replaces the M235i.

BMW 220i

The 220i Coupe and Convertible introduces a new 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine to the 2 Series range.

Codenamed B48, it generates 135kW and 270Nm, up 5kW and 20Nm respectively. Efficiency is also improved, with fuel consumption now listed at 5.8L/100km, a reduction from the previous 6.0L/100km.

When fitted with the standard eight-speed automatic transmission, zero to 100km/h is achieved in 7.2 seconds. A six-speed manual is a no-cost option.

The drop-top 220i Convertible’s key numbers include fuel economy of 6.1L/100km and zero-100km/h acceleration in 7.7 seconds.

BMW 230i

Opting for the 230i Coupe and Convertible brings a higher state of tune to the new B48 turbocharged petrol engine.

The new 230i Coupe now produces 185kW of power (up 5kW) and 350Nm of torque; good enough for zero to 100km/h acceleration of 5.6 seconds with the standard eight-speed sports automatic transmission. Fuel efficiency improves to 5.9L/100km.

The 230i Convertible consumes 6.2L/100km with a zero to 100km/h time of 5.9 seconds.

Complementing these refinements is a comprehensive update to standard specification. The popular M Sport package is now fitted as standard to the BMW 230i. The Luxury Line, which now includes premium 12-speaker harman/kardon sound and front seat electric lumbar support as standard, remains a no-cost option.

BMW M240i

Sitting at the top of the revised 2 Series range are the M240i Coupe and Convertible, which replace the M235i.

The M240i Coupe benefits from a new 3.0-litre turbocharged six-cylinder petrol engine. Codenamed B58, it employs a single twin-scroll turbocharger to generate 250kW, up 10kW over its predecessor. A 50Nm uplift in peak torque also endows the M240i with 500Nm, sent to the rear wheels via an eight-speed sports automatic transmission (a six-speed manual is a no-cost option).

The benchmark zero to 100km/h figure of 4.6 seconds presents a 0.2-second improvement.

The new engine specification is also more efficient, with a fuel economy figure of 7.1L/100km representing a 0.6L/100km improvement over the M235i.

If you prefer top-down experience, the M240i Convertible’s key figures are 7.4L/100km fuel consumption and 4.7 seconds for the zero-100km/h sprint.
