BMW M2 Coupé Revealed Ahead of 2015 Launch

A few weeks ago, we revealed BMW’s new entry level roadster called the Z2 (click here to read the article). Today, our friends at Auto Express has spoken to BMW M Division’s new boss, Dr Friedrich Nitschke, and he pretty much confirmed there will be an M version of the Z2 on its way!

No price here for guessing what it will be called, but BMW M Division is taking the fight with the Porsche Cayman and Audi TT RS very seriously indeed. According to Dr Nitschke, the M2, as the car will be badged, was key to his plans, plus it’s only the start. A Lamborghini Aventador rivalling supercar is also under consideration. Until now, BMW’s main focus has mainly been sports saloons.

The M2 will built upon the firm’s F21 architecture, which is also set to underpin the 2-Series due in 2014, with a front-engine, rear-drive layout. The 2-Series will succeed the fabulous 1-Series Coupé, which undoubtedly will spawn the next-generation M Coupé.

Unlike Audi vehicles which look like identical cars in different sizes, BMW will endow the racy new 2-Series with unique front and rear end styling, as these exclusive images reveal.

Two turbo engines are being considered for the M2 – a 3.0-litre 6-cylinder turbo unit with an output of 350bhp (261kW) and a ground-breaking tri-turbo with similar output but superior fuel efficiency. The former is similar to that seen in the recently unveiled M Coupé, while the latter will debut in the new X3M at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

Power will be transferred to the rear-wheels via BMW’s all-new DCT semi-automatic transmission, while the brakes are lifted straight out of the current M3. To keep the car’s weight in check, the M Division would employ the use of advance carbon fibre reinforced plastics extensively, developed for its Project ‘i’ cars. Similar material is used in Lexus’ exceptional LF-A supercar. They are stronger than steel yet impossibly light. On top of that, they are much easier to repair than carbon fibre.

“In the M Coupé, we have a starter car for the M Division, and we are continuing to develop this project. Such models must be sporty, and offer extraordinarily low fuel consumption. This is something we could achieve with the M2. I think the M Coupé proves there is room for an M2, a coupé”, said Nitschke.

The all new junior sports coupé will make its debut in 2015.
