Alfa Romeo Stelvio pricing and specification announced

The all-new Alfa Romeo Stelvio goes on sale this month in Australia with a two-model line-up plus a limited First Edition model, with pricing starts from $65,900 plus on-road costs.

Speaking at the launch, Alfa Romeo Australia CEO Steve Zanlunghi said the Stelvio is an all-important model for the brand, one that brings world-class performance, state-of-the-art technologies and seductive Italian flair to one of the largest and fastest growing car segments in Australia.

“We’re thrilled to be announcing the highly-anticipated release in Australia of Alfa Romeo’s first SUV, the all-new Stelvio,” Alfa Romeo Australia CEO Steve Zanlunghi said.

“The latest evolution of the Giorgio family architecture, the Stelvio seamlessly blends everything the Alfa Romeo brand stands for; style, passion and exhilaration,” he said.

Mr Zanlunghi is also excited at the prospect of the Stelvio attracting new fans to the Alfa Romeo brand.

“The premium mid-size SUV segment in Australia is forecast to grow and the introduction of the Stelvio now allows us exposure to this opportunity and with it, further expansion of the brand,” he said.

“Stelvio opens doors to customers that may not have considered our brand in the past due to the family’s lifestyle – the Stelvio has the opportunity to meet this brief while still providing a dynamic driving experience.”

Aimed firmly at disrupting the premium end of the mid-size SUV segment, the Stelvio arrives at an attractive value proposition when compared to its European rivals.

“The Stelvio’s competitive pricing presents a genuine and exciting alternative in its segment and our model mix provides plenty of opportunity for customers to find a Stelvio that suits their needs,” Mr Zanlunghi added.

The Alfa Romeo Stelvio is offered with a choice of turbocharged petrol or diesel engines, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and driving through the brand’s Q4 all-wheel-drive system.

The 2.0-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine is built entirely in aluminium with a carbon drive shaft. It generates 149kW and 330Nm, producing a 0 to 100km/h time of 7.2 seconds and a 215km/h top speed.

The 2.2-litre diesel engine is the first all-aluminium diesel among the new-generation engines from Alfa Romeo. Developing 154kW and 470Nm, the diesel-powered Stelvio dashes from 0 to 100km/h in 6.6 seconds and onto a top speed of 215km/h.

The range-topping Stelvio Quadrifoglio will join the line-up in late 2018, bringing a 2.9-litre biturbo V6 with 371kW and 600Nm of torque, the same engine fitted to the Giulia Quadrifoglio. Alfa Romeo says the Stelvio Quadrifoglio will blast from 0-60mph (0-96km/h) in just 3.9 seconds and features cylinder deactivation technology to save fuel.

Alfa Romeo claims the the Stelvio boasts near perfect 50/50 weight distribution, segment-leading torsional rigidity and the most direct steering ratio in the segment.  The Q4 AWD system is predominantly rear-wheel drive, with torque apportioned to the front wheels when more traction is needed. It’s said that the Q4 all-wheel drive system guarantees the safety advantages of all-wheel drive with the driving pleasure of a rear-wheel drive car.

For further driver customisation and input, the Stelvio offers the Alfa DNA Drive Mode Selector, which modifies the dynamic behaviour of the SUV according to the driver’s selection.

The Alfa Romeo Stelvio comes equipped with a full-suite of safety features including autonomous emergency braking, forward collision warning, rear-view camera, lane departure warning and blind spot monitoring with rear cross-path detection.
