55,000 Jeep Cherokees are set to be recalled during 2016 over a potential fire hazard.

The recall affects any units produced between February 18, 2015 and September 10, 2015 that have the optional power lift tailgate installed. According to the recall, the fault is due to to a leak in the lift system that could potentially let water enter and reach the control module. If water entered the module a potential short circuit could occur leading to fire.

Jeep dealerships will resolve the issue by replacing any water damaged parts and if necessary install a moisture shield into the lift gate.

The recall affects Cherokees globally and affected customers should receive notification from Jeep within the new year.
