2019 Toyota RAV4 Australian specifications announced

Toyota’s Australian arm has confirmed initial specifications for Australian-delivered 2019 RAV4 models, with claims of class-leading standard safety tech headlining the announcement.

All four trim-levels on offer are set to receive a comprehensive suite of active safety tech as standard, including a pre-collision safety system with pedestrian and cyclist detection, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, road sign monitoring, and auto high-beam.

Lane-keeping assist will also be available, although only automatic transmission variants with manual-equipped models missing out.

Additionally, standard passive safety tech includes a rear-view camera, front and rear parking sensors, and seven airbags.

This level of standard safety kit, bundled as the Safety Sense 2 sutie, mirrors that of the new Corolla range introduced last year, which also sports the same standard safety tech through the range.

With three different powertrains with front- and all-wheel drive combinations, and a four-tiered range of trims, a total of eleven RAV4 variants will be on offer.

GX, GXL, and Cruiser models will be available with a choice of two powertrains, the entry-level of which is a 2.0-litre petrol engine producing 127kW and 207Nm paired to either a six-speed manual in the GX, or a CVT automatic in all three.

However, the star drivetrain will be the 155kW petrol-electric hybrid with an e-CVT, which is available on all three of the aforementioned grades with a choice of either front- or, for the first time in a hybrid Toyota model, all-wheel drive.

Meanwhile, the eleventh model is the more off-road-focused Edge, which uniquely comes with a 2.5-litre petrol engine producing 152kW and 243Nm, which sends the power to all four wheels through an eight-speed torque converter automatic and a mechanical all-wheel drive system.

Although these basic specifications have now been revealed, more comprehensive details including local pricing are set to be announced in the coming months leading up to the RAV4’s Australian launch.
