Mercedes-Benz has announced the pricing and specification of the new Mercedes-AMG G63 which is scheduled for deliveries in the 3rd quarter of 2018.
Priced from $247,700 plus on-road costs, the latest iteration introduces several features that are new to the model, including two 12.3-inch widescreen displays, Multi-beam LED headlights, and AMG RIDE CONTROL adaptive damping.
Other key improvements include a new Burmester surround sound system with 15 speakers and 590 watts; ambient lighting with 64 colours and eight colour schemes; standard Parking Package with Active Parking Assist and 360° camera; a sliding glass sunroof with tilt function; a selectable AMG sports exhaust system; KEYLESS-GO starting function; an AMG Performance steering wheel in Nappa leather; and 21-inch AMG 5-Twin spoke alloy wheels.
Standard features include three 100 per cent differential locks plus an off-road information centre; digital radio and TV tuner; COMAND Online infotainment system with internet connectivity and fast hard-disc navigation featuring 3D map display and dynamic route guidance; smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto; electronically adjustable front seats, steering column and mirrors with memory function; heated seats (front and outer rear); three-zone climate control; Nappa leather upholstery, leather-finished dashboard with open-pore ash wood trim, and DINAMICA microfibre roof liner; and an AMG-specific IWC design analogue clock. The DYNAMIC SELECT function allows the driver to choose from several pre-set driving profiles – or customise their own via the ‘Individual’ feature.
Safety and security is taken care of by the addition for the first time of nine airbags, including rear seat airbags and a knee airbag, plus the DISTRONIC Active Distance Assist system with Active Lane Keeping Assist. Other key measures include Blind Spot Assist, Active Brake Assist, Traffic Sign Assist, and the PRE-SAFE system which prepares both the vehicle and occupants in the instance of an inevitable collision.
Performance comes from a bi-turbo, 4.0-litre V8 making 430 kW of power and 850 Nm of torque, up from 420kW/760Nm produced by the outgoing model’s 5.5-litre V8. Power is channelled through an AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9-Speed automatic transmission to a permanent all-wheel-drive system, including a low-range ratio with shift-on-the-move. The new Mercedes-AMG G 63 will officially accelerate from 0-100km/h in just 4.5 seconds.
According to Mercedes, the suspension has been considerably improved with a front independent suspension system replacing a front live axle. The new AMG RIDE CONTROL adaptive damping features ‘Comfort’, ‘Sport’ or ‘Sport+’ suspension profiles.
Size and space have increased in every dimension including length (+110mm); width (+106mm); wheelbase (+40mm); as well as shoulder (+38mm), hip (+45mm) and elbow room (+68mm) inside. Ground clearance improves to 238mm (+3mm), and fording depth to 700mm (+100mm). Approach angle remains unchanged at 27° while departure angle is improved by 2.6° to 29.6°.
Outside, the Mercedes-AMG G 63 is distinguished by the distinctive AMG Panamericana grille, plus AMG body styling, metallic paint, side running boards, red AMG brake calipers and two chrome-plated twin tailpipes on either side.
