2014 Volkswagen Scirocco R front quarter

Volkswagen has given its low-slung Scirocco a facelift to soldier on for another three to four years. Set to debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March, the six year-old coupé receives a slightly revised front-end consisting of more up to date bi-xenon headlights with LED accents, a reworked front bumper and mildly tweaked grille.

At the other end, its taillights have been revised and features LED technology while the car’s rear hatch has also been redesigned. A more aggressive rear bumper and new alloys complete the exterior make over.

Inside, the general dashboard has been carried over but with better quality materials and trims. There is a new set of additional gauges atop the centre air vents for the turbocharger’s boost pressure, oil temperature and chronometer. The latter as a tribute to the original model.

The driver is also greeted with new instruments clusters and a flat bottom leather steering wheel, both lifted from the Mk7 Golfs. There is a new covered storage compartment near the handbrake lever.

Technology wise, the Scirocco has been given its first automatic Park Assist system.

Under the bonnet, a range of efficient four cylinder petrol and diesel engines are available, with up to 19 per cent improvement in power and fuel economy.

In Europe, the petrol line up includes a 1.4-litre TSI that produces 92kW, three 2.0-litre TSI engines that delivers 132kW, 162kW and 206kW for the top of the range Scirocco R. It diesel line up is consist of a pair of 2.0-litre TDI good for 110kW and 135kW. All powertrain is equipped with Volkswagen’s Bluemotion engine stop/start technology, except the Scirocco’s 206kW unit.

As before, a six-speed manual transmission comes standard, with a six or seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (DSG) available as an option. The Scirocco R continues to be front-driven as well.

The 2014 Volkswagen Scirocco will go on sale in Europe from mid-August with the rest of the world to follow.
