2014 Bentley Flying Spur – fastest, most powerful four-door

British luxury marque, Bentley, has pulled the covers off the all-new 2014 Bentley Flying Spur. Looking more majestic than ever, the redesigned sedan not only promises abundance in luxury, Bentley claims the new Flying Spur will be the “fastest, most powerful four-door” model it has ever made.

Naturally, the 2014 Flying Spur is propelled by the same twin-turbocharged 6.0-litre W12 engine that is shared with the Continental GT Speed. It produces 460kW (616hp) of power and 800Nm of torque driving all four wheels via a new 8-speed automatic transmission. Torque is rear-biased an split 40/60 front to rear.

The colossal power is enough to send the 2,473kg sedan from 0-60mph (97km/h) in just 4.3 seconds and 100mph (161km/h) is accomplished in less than 10 seconds. Top speed is rated at a supercar-like 200mph (322km/h).

Despite the humongous weight and fiery performance, Bentley expects the new Flying Spur to return a better fuel consumption than the current model, with an estimated (but not certified) 19.6L/100km (12mpg) in the city and 11.8L/100km (20mpg) on the highway.

The muscular power is matched with a bold new face that is sleek and elegant. It appears lower and wider, with sharper lines and gently curvaceous surfaces. A lower roof line, deeply sculpted panels and a muscular rear haunch give the Flying Spur a more aggressive stance and a powerful dynamic profile, despite the car being almost identical in size to the outgoing model.

Weight saving measures applied to the car includes bonnet and front fenders that are constructed in aluminium. The bootlid is crafted in a polymer composite material that also integrates the main antennae for the car’s electronic systems.

The new Flying Spur is 4% stiffer than the previous-generation, while overall drag coefficient is just 0.29.

As we come to expect of cars of this stature, there is no shortage of luxury or technology inside the Flying Spur. The sumptuous interior is available in both four- and five-seat configurations, all covered in natural premium-quality leather as well as seat heating and cooling.

Electrically-operated rear side blinds are fitted as standard, while a glass sunroof is a no-cost option. Behind the rear centre armrest, a 9-litre bottle cooler can be specified to keep drinks perfectly chilled.

At the front, a high-resolution 8” touch-screen features satellite-navigation, Bluetooth and its own Wi-Fi hotspot. Infotainment functions can also be controlled by voice activation. They are complemented by an 8-channel, 8-speaker audio system featuring Balanced Mode Radiator technology for optimum sound clarity and frequency range that can play music from a built-in hard drive. A 1100 watts Naim for Bentley Premium Audio System is available as an option.
