Volkswagen has announced the new Beetle Dune concept will make its debut at the 2014 North American International Motor Show next week.

As you can see from these preview sketches, the concept is based on the latest Volkswagen Beetle and may look a little familiar as the German marque has presented a similar study based on the previous Beetle back in 2000 (below).

The new Beetle Dune concept is however, more muscular and looks like an SUV with extended wheel arches fitted with black moldings, restyled bumpers and side sills equipped with protective plates and tough looking alloy wheels.

The interior has also received a rugged makeover, with bright yellow accents on the dashboard, door and steering wheel trims. The glovebox has also been replaced with a grip handle.

Powering the Beetle Dune concept is Volkswagen’s 155kW 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine borrowed from the Mk6 Golf GTI. It is mated with a 6-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission.

While Volkswagen claims it has no intention of putting the Dune into production for now, reports out of Germany suggests that a production model could hit showrooms as early as 2015.
