Volkswagen BlueSport roadster back on the drawing board

Volkswagen’s design chief, Walter de Silva, has reignited talks about a future Volkswagen roadster in an interview with German publication, AMS Magazine.

In 2009 at the Detroit Motor Show, the manufacturer unveiled the Volkswagen BlueSport roadster concept that was said to preview an upcoming roadster. It was also going to form the basis for an entry level Porsche sports car. However, the project was subsequently put on hold as the business case didn’t stack up due to the aftermath of the Global Financial Crisis.

However, some executives within the group’s corridors of power still believe in the potential of a small roadster.

“I’m not the only one in our company who is convinced that a small roadster wouldn’t be the worst thing for Volkswagen,” said de Silva during the interview.

“This is a vehicle that we particularly like, and we always have in mind,” he added.

With the upcoming roadster version of the highly successful 86 from rival, Toyota, it makes sense for Volkswagen to re-examine the BlueSport proposal. Powered by a 2.0-litre turbo diesel engine developing 132kW (180PS) and 350Nm of torque, the BlueSport had an average consumption of just 4.3L/100km and emits 113g/km of CO2.

Volkswagen claimed the BlueSport will sprint from 0-100km/h 6.6 seconds and has a top speed of 226km/h.

We certainly hope the VW BlueSport will see the light of day.
