Toyota developing sub-86 entry-level RWD sports car

Toyota has reportedly started development of a small entry-level RWD sports car to sit below the Toyota 86.

It will form a three-prong sports car attack from the Japanese giant, with the upcoming Supra sitting at the top, followed by the next-generation 86 and said entry-level sports car.

“We have started on the car below the 86,” announced Tetsuya Tada, chief engineer of the Toyota 86.

“It is not yet decided if it will be two-seat or two-plus-two we are developing the concept now,” he continues.

Like the 86, the new entry-level model will be rear-wheel drive and will retain the fun-to-drive character of the 86.

“Rear-wheel drive is the best solution for sports car handling so this will be true for all three Toyota sports cars,” Tada explained.

No further details have been revealed but the car is expected to weigh under 1,000kg and be similarly sized as the Mazda MX5.
