Toyota Australia is introducing a special-edition Camry RZ, a limited run model, which according to the car maker, is loaded with sporty features valued at more than $4,000 – but with a premium of just $2,000 over the volume-selling Altise on which it is based.

The spirited new RZ comes with the addition of brawny 18-inch gloss-black alloy wheels and low-profile tyres, sports suspension, twin exhausts and styling enhancements.

The 18-inch wheel and suspension package, developed in Australia, aims to elevate the Camry RZ’s overall handling and dynamics for “people who enjoy the fundamental excitement of driving a car”.

Previously available as standard on Camry Atara SX or optional on Atara SL, the dynamic package retains Camry’s traditional quality and reliability while making the car more agile and responsive.

The sports suspension with 45-series rubber promises improved body control and ride comfort while a faster steering-gear ratio is said to offer a more connected driving feel.

Complementing the aggressive wheels, the Camry RZ’s exterior exudes a more confident style by adding a series of black enhancements – a sports-mesh radiator grille, halogen headlamp inserts, exterior mirror casings, boot-lip spoiler and rear-bumper diffuser.

The dual exhaust system lifts power to 135kW and torque to 235Nm from Camry’s 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, which is rated at 7.9L/100km in the average cycle.

Front and rear corner parking sensors plus RZ decals on the lower rear door and boot lid complete the RZ exterior upgrades.

Two gloss paint colours are available at no extra cost – diamond white or cherry. Three other premium colours – silver pearl or graphite (metallic) or eclipse black (mica) – are $450 options.

Interior appointments have been expanded to include dual-zone climate-control automatic air-conditioning, premium three-spoke steering wheel, colour 4.2-inch multi-information display and RZ-branded front floor mats. Keyless smart entry and smart start is also included as standard.

Just 1,100 Camry RZ petrol sedans are being produced over a three-month period priced from $28,490 plus on-road costs.
