Infiniti took the wraps off the QX50 Concept this week at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit, unveiling an almost production-ready SUV with stunning designs well known to the Japanese luxury marque.

An evolution of the QX Sport Inspiration showcased at the 2016 Beijing Motor Show, the QX50 is Infiniti’s take on the fast-growing premium mid-size crossover segment, rivalling the likes of BMW X3, Audi Q5, Mercedes-Benz GLC and Lexus NX. The revised QX50 is taller, wider and more practical than the original concept, says Infiniti. It has also further incorporated design elements that can be used for a future production model.

To create more passenger space and cargo area, Infiniti has pushed the base of the A-pillar forward and make the rear hatch more vertical. The bonnet has been shortened for a more compact dimension while still allows for enough space to fit the brand’s newly developed variable compression turbo engine, VC-Turbo.

As the name suggests, the VC-Turbo unit is able to adapt its compression ratio according to driving conditions to deliver optimum performance and efficiency. The new engine technology is said to combine the power of a high-performance 2.0-liter turbo petrol engine with the torque and efficiency of an advanced diesel powertrain.

The new QX50 Concept also previews Infiniti’s upcoming autonomous drive support technologies, which will act as a “co-pilot” for the driver, empowering rather than replacing them. The system delegates more onerous driving tasks to the car such as navigating stop-start traffic on the highway or keeping track of the positions of surrounding vehicles, while ensuring the driver retains ultimate control over their vehicle.

The production Infiniti QX50 is set to hit showrooms worldwide in early 2018.
