Following on the recently revealed facelifted Golf range, Volkswagen has unleashed its range-topping hot hatch, the 2017 Golf R.

While the subtle facelift brings a new set of LED headlights and more aggressive front bumper, the headline news is no doubt the car’s more potent 2.0-litre turbocharged four, which now packs 228kW and 400Nm of torque. Volkswagen says the new Golf R is capable of hitting 100km/h in a mere 4.6 seconds.

Available in both hatchback and wagon body style in Europe, the car can be ordered with a six-speed manual or DSG.

Outside, not much has changed with the updated model besides the new front fascia, although the side skirts are now similar to the Golf GTI’s. At the back, the quad exhaust pipes remain, along with a mildly tweaked rear bumper.

As with the rest of the updated MY17 Golf range, the new Composition Colour infotainment system with gesture control will be on offer.
