BMW M2 arrives Down Under priced from sub-$90k

BMW’s long awaited M2 coupe has arrived Down Under, bringing huge performance M Gmbh has been well known for in a small package. With deliveries starting this month, the BMW M2 is priced from $89,900 plus on-road costs for the 6-speed manual only, entry-level M2 Pure. It is joined by the range topping, 7-speed double clutch transmission equipped M2 from $98,900.

Building upon the success of the limited edition 1 Series M Coupe sold here in 2011, the M2 Coupe carries all the hallmarks that have defined BMW’s M brand – originally established to oversee the company’s racing operations – for over 40 years.

Chief Executive Officer of BMW Group Australia, Marc Werner, said Australians have long embraced BMW’s M cars with enthusiasm and with the launch of the M2 Coupe, high performance driving pleasure was now available to even more customers.

“With prices starting from only $89,900, the two-door M2 Coupe brings a whole world of BMW M race-bred performance, stunning design and dynamic driving characteristics to a new generation of customers,” Mr Werner said.

“Its impressive performance, powerful styling, extensive standard equipment and attractive price point ensures the M2 Coupe sets a new benchmark for compact sports cars offering enormous appeal for driving enthusiasts.”

The BMW M2 Coupe is available in two variants – M2 Pure and M2 – that both feature a 272kW/465Nm 3.0-litre turbocharged in-line six cylinder petrol engine. Driving through the rear wheels, the engine in the M2 Pure is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox with the M2 fitted with BMW’s seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission (M DCT) with Integrated Launch Control function as standard.

The 6-speed manual – which is offered as a no cost option for the M2 – comes with new carbon fibre friction lining and speed synchronization. It automatically blips the throttle on downshifts and reduces engine speeds during upshifts.

The powertrain enables the BMW M2 Coupe to sprint from 0-100km/h in just 4.3 seconds when fitted with the M DCT, or 4.5 seconds with the six-speed manual gearbox, en route to a limited top speed of 250km/h.

The M2’s 19-inch alloy wheels are shod with low profile Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres with 245/35 ZR 19s on the front and wide 265/35 ZR 19s on the rear.

Further enhancing traction and directional stability is the M Sports Suspension, dual-mode Electric Power Steering, Active M Differential and specific M-tuned Dynamic Stability Control.

To provide superb stopping power, the M2 Coupe is fitted with high performance M compound brakes with blue painted four piston callipers at the front and two-piston callipers on the rear, acting on large 380mm front and 370mm rear perforated and vented cast iron discs.
