Audi TT Sportback concept unwrapped with 294kW from 2.0 TFSI

Audi TT Sportback concept

Audi has taken the wraps of the TT Sportback concept, a five-door version of the new TT coupe. Set to be unveiled at the Paris Motor Show, the new concept previews a new member of a potential TT family.

Compared to the production TT, the Sportback is larger in every horizontal dimensions. It is 290mm longer, 60mm wider and has a 2,630mm wheelbase, 120mm longer than the TT, while the height is 30mm lower.

Inheritating the front fascia of the TT, the Sportback features a new bumper with a revised grille and air inlets. The elongated body now incorporates two extra rear doors. Further back, the Sportback distinguishes completely from the TT with a new rear end design. The one-piece rear lights – which also include vertical separators inspired by the R18 – form independent structures. These are linked to one another by the handle edge of the luggage compartment, which constitutes a powerfully contoured continuous trim.

Inside, the TT Sportback concept adopts the production TT’s futuristic interior, with an all-new 12.3-inch TFT screen powered by an Nvidia Tegra 30 graphic processor position right in front of the driver. Audi’s “less is more” design philosophy sees the instrument cluster and the MMI screen combined to form a central, digital unit – the so-called Audi virtual cockpit. In addition, the controls for the air con system are positioned directly in the air vents. Two individual rear seats line the back row, allowing the Sportback to seat four in comfort.

Captivating the performance characteristic of the TT Sportback concept is the 2.0 TFSI engine. The turbocharged direct injection four-cylinder engine pumps out an impressive 294kW of power at 6,400rpm and 450Nm of torque available between 2,400rpm and 6,000rpm. The engine boasts 147kW (200hp) of power per litre of displacement, making it one of the most powerful four-pots in the world. Despite the figures, the TT Sportback consumes just 7.0 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres in the combined cycle.

The key to the 2.0 TFSI’s high output lies in several technologies, including special aluminium pistons with an integrated cooling channel and a crankshaft made from ultra-high-strength forged steel. The crankcase consists of a new, high-strength casting alloy and the cylinder head has been designed for the increased gas flow rate. The turbocharger has also been redeveloped and builds up a maximum relative boost pressure of 1.8 bar. It contains a mixed flow turbine wheel that is noted for its particularly fast start-up performance.

Driving all four wheels through Audi’s quattro system and a compact seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission, the TT Sportback rockets from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.9 seconds.

The body plays a leading role in the lightweight construction concept of the Audi TT Sportback concept on the basis of the modular transverse matrix (MQB). With its composite concept, the body represents the latest evolution of the Audi Space Frame (ASF). Its hybrid construction ensures that the show car has a low centre of gravity – ideal for sporty driving.
