Toyota has launched its third-generation seven-seat Kluger SUV with most models copping a price drop of at least $1,500. Available in three models, the range kicks off with the Kluger GX 2WD at $40,990 – $2,200 cheaper than before.

All models are equipped with a 3.5-litre V6 engine paired with a new six-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission with selectable manual sequential shifting and artificial intelligence that adapts to driving styles and provide engine braking on downhill runs.

The V6 petrol delivers 201kW of power at 6,200rpm and 337Nm of torque at 4,700rpm while returning a combined fuel consumption of 10.2L/100km for the 2WD. That engine features Toyota’s acoustic control induction system (ACIS) which varies the effective length of the inlet runners to make maximum use of the inlet pulsation effect for increased breathing efficiency.

It also boosts dual variable valve timing with intelligence, electronic throttle, direct ignition and a lightweight cast-aluminium cylinder block.

The Japanese giant’s engineers have liberated more interior space by developing a slightly longer and wider body. It now measures 4,865 in length and 1,925 in width and 1,730mm in height, with a 2,790mm wheelbase. This makes it 80mm longer and 15mm wider than the outgoing model.

The seat hip points have been moved forward within the cabin to increase the length of the luggage area and provide greater ease of access to the second and third-row seats.

Toyota claims the Kluger is more dynamic with both steering and suspension undergoing significant local development to suit the demands of Aussie drivers and local conditions.

AWD models (a $4000 option) include standard Dynamic Torque Control and Downhill Assist Control.

Toyota Australia’s executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said development of the new Kluger had focused on expanding its visual appeal, developing an even better package for families, and providing greater driver enjoyment.

“The styling has been made more aggressive, enhancing Kluger’s emotional appeal to attract new customers in addition to impressing our strong band of loyal owners,” Mr Cramb said.

“New Kluger has advanced features that really make a difference, with convenience and peace-of-mind technologies that help create a safer and more enjoyable vehicle for the entire family.

“We have also dialled up the fun-to-drive factor with extensive under-the-skin improvements that have been developed and tested in Australia to take Kluger’s dynamics and steering to the next level.

“With standard features including a reversing camera, rear parking sensors, touch-screen display audio systems and Toyota Link multimedia, the new Kluger offers remarkable value – not just against the superseded model, but against comparable vehicles in its segment,” he said.

The Kluger’s dominant front grille, subtle sculpted sides and prominent wheel arches give the car a muscular stance.2014 Toyota Kluger GXL

Inside, the redesigned interior gets soft-touch surfaces, bright accents and better ergonomics. Smart storage solutions include an under-dash tray shaped to prevent items sliding out and a 24.5-litre roll-top centre console that doubles as an armrest and is big enough to store a large handbag.

Every Kluger packs a reversing camera, rear parking sensors, seven airbags, cruise control, air-conditioning, front fog lamps, six-speaker display audio with Toyota Link multimedia and a multi-information display.

The entry-level GX also gets 18-inch alloy wheels, daytime running lamps, tilt-and-telescopic steering adjustments and Toyota’s active safety package of stability and traction control, ABS with Brake Assist and EBD and Hill-Start Assist.

The mid-grade GXL priced from $49,990 ($1,500 cheaper than before) adds three-zone climate-control air-conditioning, keyless entry and start, 10-way power adjustable driver’s seat, roof rails and leather-accented interior.

At the top of the range is the $63,990 Grande ($3,355 more than before) that Toyota claims have more than $7,000 worth of extra features than before. This includes Toyota’s Pre-collision Safety System, Active Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert and Blind Spot Monitor.

It also picks up 19-inch wheels, project LED headlamps with Auto High Beam, tile-and-slide moonroof, ventilated front seats, 8-inch display audio with navigation and DAB+ digital radio, second-row sunshades, 9-inch rear-seat entertainment system with Blu-ray player, power-operated tailgate, woodgrain-look pattern highlights and a full-colour 4.2-inch multi-information display.

The Kluger range also gets Toyota Service Advantage cap-price servicing at $170 for each of the first six scheduled services.
