The all-new 2020 Toyota Corolla will arrive in November with a comprehensive suite of driver assistance safety systems and a new hybrid powertrain option.
Unlike most of its rivals, the new Corolla sedan will carry the same price tag as its hatchback equivalent, starting at $23,335 before on-road costs for the Ascent Sport manual. That means an increase of $2,095 over the outgoing Ascent sedan, with the CVT adding another $1,500 to the price.
Under its bonnet is a 2.0litre in-line four developing 125kW and 200Nm, up from 103kW/173Nm over its predecessor.
The extra outlay also brings a comprehensive list of standard kit, including Toyota Safety Sense with autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian detection, road sign assist, active cruise control, lane-keeping assist and automatic headlights.
Inside, the 8.0-inch infotainment system now comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto across the board.
The Corolla sedan will also be offered with a hybrid powertrain for the first time, featuring a 1.8-litre petrol engine that is married to a pair of electric motors for a combined output of 90kW, as well as a promise of 3.5L/100km on the combined cycle. The Ascent Sport hybrid starts from $26,335 plus on-road costs.
The next model up is the SX which is priced from $28,235 for the petrol CVT (no manual is offered on the SX), while the hybrid costs $29,735 – all before on-road costs.
Equipment wise, it adds a ‘premium’ three-spoke steering wheel with paddle shifters, keyless entry and start, wireless phone charger, satellite navigation with traffic updates, DAB digital radio and blind-spot monitoring.
Finally, the range-topping ZR costs $33,635 plus on-roads and is available with as petrol CVT only. It gains a sunroof, 18-inch alloy wheels, heated manmade leather/suede sports seats, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, a 9-speaker JBL sound system and head-up display.
