Volkswagen has unveiled the pricing and specifications for its updated 2017 Volkswagen Golf GTI and R performance range, with pricing kicking off at $41,490 plus on-road costs for the GTI six-speed manual.
Headlining the updated range is the return of the three-door GTI and the Golf R wagon, the latter joining the lineup as a permanent member from January 2018 after the sellout Wolfburg Edition from the pre-update model.
As reported previously, the GTI’s 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine now churns out 169kW, while torque remains at 350Nm.
Standard equipment include fresh 18-inch ‘Milton Keynes’ alloys, adaptive chassis control, dual-zone climate control with Air Care filtration, keyless entyr and start, an 8-inch ‘Discover Media’ infotainment system with satellite navigation and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, LED interior ambient lighting and LED headlights with dynamic cornering.
All models, including the regular Golf range, are now equipped with autonomous emergency braking (AEB), multi-collision braking and driver fatigue monitor.
Options on the Golf GTI include Driver Assistance Package ($1600), Infotainment Package ($2300) and GTI Luxury Package ($3900).
As before, the Drive Assistance Package adds adaptive cruise control, lane assist, blind spot monitor, park assist, proactive occupant protection and dynamic light assist (new).
The Infotainment pack brings the 12.3-inch Active Info Display digital instrument cluster, a 9.2-inch ‘Discover Pro’ satellite navigation system with gesture and voice control, along with a 400W Dynaudio premium sound system with 10-channel amplifier and subwoofer.
Meanwhile, the GTI Luxury Package adds a panoramic sunroof, Vienna leather upholstery, heated front seats, electrically-adjustable driver’s seat with memory and power folding exterior mirror with memory function.
The three-door GTI arrives in the form of Performance Edition 1 priced from $47,990 and limited to just 150 units. It gets an uprated 180kW/370Nm version of the 2.0-litre turbo paired with a new seven-speed wet-clutch DSG transmission and front differential lock. It also gains larger brakes, 19-inch ‘Brescia’ alloy wheels, honeycomb microfleece/leatherette upholstery and LED taillights with sequential indicators.
Inside, the 12.3-inch Active Info Display, adaptive cruise control, lane assist, park assist, dynamic light assist, rear privacy glass and blind spot monitor are standard, along with a merchandise pack worth $300. The only option for the model is a panoramic sunroof for $1900.
At the pinnacle of the range sits the Golf R hatch, which pricing remains the same – $52,990 with a six-speed manual, and $55,490 with the new seven-speed wet-clutch DSG. Pricing for the Golf R Wagon will be announced closer to launch early next year.
The Golf R is now propelled by a 213kW/380Nm 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol mated with Volkswagen’s 4Motion all-wheel drive system.
Standard features include the new 9.2-inch ‘Discover Pro’ satellite navigation system with gesture and voice control, 12.3-inch Active Info Display, Vienna Leather upholstery, heated front seats, electrically-adjustable driver’s seat with memory, power folding exterior mirror with memory, rear privacy glass, metallic paint, 19-inch ‘Spielberg’ alloy wheels and LED taillights with sequential indicators.
Options include the Driver Assistance Package similar to the GTI but minus the park assist feature, and a $1900 panoramic sunroof.
The Golf R Wolfsburg Edition (in DSG only) also returns in limited numbers in both hatch and wagon body styles, with pricing to be confirmed.
Both models get 19-inch ‘Pretoria’ alloy wheels in grey metallic, real carbon-fibre exterior mirror caps, chrome roof rails (wagon), ‘Carbon’ nappa leather upholstery, 400W Dynaudio sound system, adaptive cruise control, lane assist, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert and dynamic light assist.
