Volkswagen Golf 8 already underway – early details

2019 Volkswagen Golf 8 rendering

While it seems like only yesterday that the Volkswagen Golf 7 joined us, but work on the popular next-generation model has already begun deep in the skunk works of Volkswagen in Wolfsburg. The German giant will draw on technologies it created for the ultra-frugal XL1 for the Golf 8.

According to Autocar in the UK, the eight-generation Golf, which is set to debut in 2019, will have CO2 emissions cut to “well below 90g/km”. For the entire range. That’s roughly the same as that of a Toyota Prius Hybrid!

To achieve that, Volkswagen will seriously rely on radical and innovative aerodynamics solutions, as employed on the XL1. It will also need to further trim the car’s weight to around or under 1,100kg.

The challenge for VW engineers is to implement those technologies using the same MQB platform that is found underneath today’s car. This will necessitate employing a series of other innovations such as a flywheel that drives the wheels, variable compression engines, electric turbo/surperchargers amongst others. While these may sound cutting edge today, they are likely to be relatively common place by the time the Golf 8 hit the market.
