It seems that Toyota’s product renaissance is going to get more exciting, starting with a sedan version of top-selling Toyota 86. According to a recent report by Carsales, the firm is developing a four-door 86 as well as a shooting brake (sports wagon).

We know that Toyota has recently shelved the 86 convertible but a Toyota insider told the publication that the sedan has been given the go-ahead.

Toyota will target the new sports sedan at 40-something buyers who grew up with the likes of the rear-wheel drive Corolla AE86, Nissan Silvia, Mazda RX-8 or Honda S2000. The sedan will sit on an 86 platform that has been stretched by 100mm and will feature a “keen-look” grille, whatever that means.

It will also share the coupe’s 147kW 2.0-litre boxer engine, although a next-generation hybrid system will be on offer as well. The new ‘Hybrid R’ sports hybrid system, which is tactically differentiated from Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive system in its current hybrid cars, features a one-motor parallel drive set-up that produces up to 200kW while achieving 10-15 per cent better fuel economy. It will likely employ a Kinetic Energy Recovery System that recovers the car’s kinetic energy while braking.

The Toyota 86 sports sedan is expected to hit showrooms in late 2015 priced slightly higher than the coupe.
