Here’s a mini MINI that the kid in us would love to have. Unfortunately, it’s not for sale. It is part of BMW’s fleet of official London Olympic vehicles, and specifically the Paralympic fleet – no joke!
Obviously, the mini MINI won’t be shuttling your average athletes or officials around the Olympic Park. The radio-controlled MINI is instead designed to ferry javelins, discuses, hammers and shots back from the field to the throwing area in the Olympic Stadium.
The approximately quarter scale MINI, complete with True Blue paintwork with orange London 2012 Games livery and white roof, measures 1,100mm (43.3 inches) long and can carry up to 8kg (18 pounds) of athletic equipment such as a single hammer, discus or a shot or two javelins in its interior, which is accessible through the adapted roof.
It is powered by a 10hp electric motor that can maintain 35 minutes of continuous usage, with a radio control range of around 100 metres (3218 feet). The batteries can be fully recharged in 80 minutes.
“The MINI team was thrilled to be given this challenge to develop a vehicle with such an important and high profile role during the Olympic and Paralympic Games,” said Juergen Hedrich, Managing Director of MINI Plant Oxford.
A fleet of three mini MINIs will serve the Games and will be operated by Games Makers assigned and trained for this duty.
