The new Volkswagen Golf VII isn’t due until sometime in 2013, however, AutoExpress’ sharp eye carparazzi managed to catch a glimpse of the interior of the new Golf.
The car was a test mule for the forthcoming model hidden under the skin of the current car. The new instrument features large speedometer and rev meter. The needles now rest at the 6 o’clock position, like its more expensive cousin, Audi. One unusual feature is the needles for the fuel and temperature gauge have been replaced with a string of LED lights. This allows them to be housed within the speedometer and rev counter without compromising on legibility.
The next generation Golf platform will no doubt spawn various models within the Golf product line up including the usual estate, cabrio and Golf Plus. On top of that, a four door coupé is also on the cards for the first time, as previewed by the Compact Coupé at the Detroit Motor Show last year.
Unlike the Golf VI, the new Golf will sit on an all new platform. Volkswagen Chief of Development, Ulrich Hackenburg explained that the new chassis is designed to utilise a new range of drivetrains. In other words, we can expect hybrid and electric propulsion for the new model.
One of the engines due to appear is the 2.0-litre turbo diesel coupled with a 61kW electric motor unit previewed on the Twin Drive Golf Concept. The concept car has a combined output of 130kW and will travel close to 50km on electric power alone.
