All-new 2017 Audi S4 dips just under $100k packing 260kW/500Nm

The all-new Audi S4 sedan and Avant have arrived in Australia, powered by an all-new 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 engine. With the same standing acceleration figures as the last-generation RS 4 Avant – reaching 100km/h in just 4.7sec – the all-new S4 promises serious performance under its svelte new shape.

“Over five generations, the Audi S4 has established itself as a sports car that provides a unique combination of muscular performance in a sophisticated package,” said Andrew Doyle, Managing Director of Audi Australia.

“The all-new Audi S4 sedan and Avant stay true to this formula, while offering more progressive technology than ever before. Intelligent infotainment and connectivity systems are hallmarks of this new model, as well as highly developed chassis concept that reduces weight by 75kg, while improving handling and ride comfort.

“The all-new S4 sedan and Avant offer a new standard of refined performance.”

2017 Audi S4 and S4 Avant pricing (excluding on-roads):

S4 Sedan 3.0 TFSI quattro tiptronic                 $99,900
S4 Avant 3.0 TFSI quattro tiptronic                 $102,900

Ditching the supercharger in the previous engine for a turbocharge set up, the newly developed 3.0-litre V6 engine in the S4 produces 260kW, an increase of 15kW. Its peak torque of 500Nm is a gain of 60Nm and available from as low as 1,370rpm.

It boasts a twin-scroll turbocharger location inside the 90-degree vee, ensuring the shortest possible travel paths for exhaust gases to pass through. Combined cycle fuel economy is rated at a responsible 7.7L/100km for the S4 sedan.

Matched to the eight-speed tiptronic automatic transmission and the Audi quattro all-wheel drive system, the S4 is 0.3 second faster to reach 100km/h, at 4.7 seconds.

At the heart of the quattro all-wheel-drive system sits a mechanical centre differential. Under normal driving conditions, the differential splits the engine’s torque 40/60 front/rear, though up to 85 percent can be directed to either end if slip occurs. In addition to brake-based torque vectoring at the front axle, active torque vectoring is employed at the rear axle with the optional sport differential which can apportion even more torque to the rear wheel with the most grip. Audi claims this effectively ‘points’ the car towards the apex of a corner.

The brake system is suitably powerful, with 350mm ventilated front discs clamped by 6-piston calipers.

The new S4 styling is subtly understated. At the front, the Singleframe grille and the accentuated horizontal lines underline the width. The bumpers and air inlets are prominently profiled. Many of the add-on parts are painted in finely graduated matt grey tones, accentuated with chrome trimming at selected points.

The standard 18 inch wheels in 5 twin-spoke star design roll on 245/40 size tyres all round. A 19-inch alternative is available as an option.

Inside, the S sport seats are covered in a combination of pearl Nappa leather and Alcantara in the colors ebony, rotor grey and magma red. They have adjustable side sections, integrated headrests, and a pneumatic massage function.

Audi virtual cockpit also made its way to the S4 interior. The fully digital instrument cluster displays all key information on a high resolution 12.3-inch screen using detailed graphics. The driver can choose between three views – one of them is an exclusive Sport screen, which moves the rev counter into the centre.

The all-new S4 Avant shares all of the performance hardware beneath its sedan sibling, but offered with more practicality with 505 litres of luggage space, or 1,510 litres with the rear seats folded flat. It comes standard with the convenient electric tailgate, activated by a sensor-controlled ‘kick motion’, as well as an electric sliding luggage cover. The all-new S4 Avant reaches 100km/h in just 4.9sec, with fuel economy of 7.8 L/100km.

The new S4 range is offered with a full suite of safety systems as standard fitment including:

  • Active Lane Assist
  • Adaptive cruise control with Traffic Jam Assist
  • Exit warning system
  • Cross traffic assist, rear
  • Audi side assist blind spot warning system
  • Audi pre-sense basic (belt tensioning, window closing and other preventative measures if an emergency is detected)
  • Audi pre-sense front with Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) and pedestrian detection (up to 85 km/h), turn assist, collision avoidance assist, and high-beam assist
  • Audi pre-sense rear (warns following traffic if they are at risk of running into the rear of the car)
  • Parking system plus with surround-view camera
