Hot on the heels of the new garden variety Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake, the company’s performance arm AMG, has unveiled the latest CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake.
Powered by AMG’s latest 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine, it produces 386kW of power and a massive 700Nm of torque from 5250-5750 rpm. For those opting for the Edition 1 power upgrade, the same V8 produces an extra 24kW and 100Nm. 0 – 100km/h is achieved in 4.4 and 4.3 seconds respectively.
Despite offering dynamism similar to that of a sports car, AMG’s latest V8 sips a respectable 10.1l/100km (NEDC) which corresponds to a CO2 output of 235 g/km and is identical for both power units. This is thanks to combination of direct petrol injection with spray-guided combustion, piezo injectors, biturbocharging, air/water intercooling, generator management and ECO start/stop function.
Handling all those power is AMG’s SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission. The dual-clutch gearbox boasts four individual transmission modes as well as automatic double declutching and RACE START functions.
The CLS 63 AMG also features the AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension, with steel suspension struts on the front axle and air suspension struts on the rear axle, as well as automatic level control and electronically controlled damping system. Handling is also enhanced by a front track which is 56mm wider than the standard CLS Shooting Brake.
Visually, the AMG front apron with cross strut finished in high-gloss black, the AMG radiator grille with single slat, the AMG-specific design of the bonnet, the AMG-specific rear apron with diffuser look and the AMG sports exhaust system with two chrome twin tailpipes provide an extra level of aggressiveness to the elegant styling of the CLS Shooting Brake.
A newly introduced feature on all AMG vehicles is the chrome-look electronic key with AMG emblem. Other standard features are extensive and include high-performance LED headlamps including Intelligent Light System and adaptive Highbeam Assist, memory sports seats wrapped in nappa leather and sports steering wheel with flattened top and bottom sections.
