Event: 2011 One Lap of America

One Lap of America is a major motorsport event in America where participants drive from race tracks to race tracks across America to compete in time trial sessions. Part of the fun, other than the track events is the endurance driving across America, which covers over 4000 miles (6400 km). The event stretches over eight days featuring some of the fastest street-legal cars available today.

This year’s event saw some 80 cars tackling some of the most challenging circuits across America including the BMW Performance Center in Greer, South Carolina, the Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida and the Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama. There was a good mix of cars this year with entrants ranging from Corvette, Porsche, Mini, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, BMW and Mustang.

The rules to enter the event are simple. You will need a street legal car and buy a set of tires from the event main sponsor, Tire Rack. Although you are allowed to use up to six sets of tires for the entire event, most participants only use one. Each car must have two drivers and no support  vehicles are allowed throughout the 8-day long competition.

The winner this year is the Top Speed Motorsports 2010 Nissan GT-R driven by Leh Keen and Douglas Wilks. Coming in second is 2011 Porsche 911 Turbo S driven by Huge Bate and Rene von Richtofen. Rounding up the top three is Roush Performance’s 2012 Ford Stage 3 Mustang driven by William Johnson and Jaime Lyons.

At the finish line the winning Nissan GT-R driven by Leh Keen put up a little stint with some massive tire smoking action for the crowd. Check out the video and the rest of the photos from the event after the jump.
