The next generation Audi A4 has finally landed on Australian shores starting at a modest price of $55,500.

The A4 will be offered in a choice of four drivetrains, including three TFSI petrol variants and one TDI diesel model. All models now come with a 7-speed S tronic double-clutch transmission as standard equipment.

On the low-end spectrum, Audi offers the 1.4-litre TFSI engine which develops 110kW with a peak torque of 250Nm. Audi claims it can make a 0-100km/h time of 8.5 seconds and a fuel consumption as low as 5.5L/100km.

Audi’s mid range petrol model comes in the form of an all-new 2.0-litre TFSI. This new engine features a higher compression ratio than in earlier generations, providing increased output while remaining highly efficient. This new engine can apparently reach an economy score as low as 5.3-L/100km and will output 140kW with 320Nm of torque. Acceleration comes slightly quicker with a 0-100km/h time of 7.3 seconds.

Topping the petrol range comes the 2.0 TFSI Quattro. This premium drivetrain features the highly popular Quattro all-wheel drive system with a 2.0-litre engine producing 185kW and 370Nm of torque. The incredible grip provided by the all-wheel drive system allows the driver to fully use the engine, propelling the driver to 100km/h in just 5.8 seconds. Fuel consumption is still reasonable at 6.3L/100km.

Alternatively, for customers looking for extended range and torque, a 2.0-litre TDI Quattro is available. The turbo diesel produces 140kW and 400Nm of torque and features the very same all-wheel drive system as found on the high-end TFSI. Audi claims this model will achieve a 0-100 time of 7.2 seconds, making it 0.1 seconds faster than the mid-range TFSI. Fuel efficiency is the best of all the models offered, with a combined cycle of 4.6 L/100km.

Overall, the body has gotten larger and it features a longer wheelbase, however, Audi’s focus on lightweight construction methods means this new A4 is up to 65kg lighter than previous generations.

The A4’s suspension architecture has been given a complete overhaul, it now implements a five-link rear suspension arrangement in hopes it will improve ride comfort. Optionally customers can order adaptive suspension setups designed for comfort or sport across the entire A4 range.

Audi further improved safety on this model with features such as autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian detection, cross-traffic assist, and collision avoidance to name a few.

Every model will now come with an MMI Navigation plus infotainment system featuring an 8.3-inch touch-screen display. The system features built-in navigation with live traffic, a DVD player and 10gb of music storage. Phone integration comes in the form of Apple Carplay and Android Auto allowing voice control and app integration.

In addition to standard equipment, Audi offers more upgrades such as the Technik package which will add Audi’s virtual cockpit and heads-up display or Alternatively, the more impressive S line sports package which adds a sporty flair with 19-inch wheels, S line interior and exterior detailing, sports suspension, mixed leather/Alcantara upholstery and a flat-bottom steering wheel.
