The all-new, second generation Volkswagen Tiguan has arrived Down Under with a full range of petrol and diesel variants in varying grade levels.

Pricing for the physically larger Tiguan kicks off from $31,990 plus on-road costs, two grand cheaper than the comparable first generation entry model at the time of its launch. The three-tier line-up consists of the range-opening Trendline, mid-spec Comfortline and the full fat Highline.

The new engine range consists of three TSI petrol engines: a 110kW, a 132kW and a range-topping 162kW, and two TDI diesel engines: a 110kW, and a 140kW engine; each featuring BlueMotion Stop/Start Technology. These engines (with the exception of the 110kW TSI) are combined with the latest generation 4MOTION all-wheel drive system with Active Control.

The proportions of the new model give it a powerful stance on the road with a 38mm reduction in height to 1,648mm and a 30mm growth in width to 1,839mm. At 4,486mm in length, it is
also 60mm longer than its predecessor. The wheelbase was extended to 2,681mm – a gain of 76mm for better interior space.

Inside, the new Tiguan is 26mm longer than before, liberating more legroom. At the rear, up to three passengers can now enjoy 29mm more knee room. Despite its lower overall height, the Tiguan’s ergonomic design is said to offer more headroom. The car also offers a sliding rear bench that was optimised to permit 180mm of adjustment – 20mm more than in the previous model. With the rear bench slid forward, the boot offers 615 litres of space. The space expands to 1,655 litres when the rear seats are folded, a gain of 145 litres.

Riding on Volkswagen’s MQB platform, the new Tiguan sees a weight saving of up to 53kg. In the body alone, the company claims around 12kg of weight is saved despite the longer wheelbase and longer vehicle length.
