Europe’s largest carmaker, Volkswagen, has taken the wraps off its latest crossover model, the all-wheel drive Golf Alltrack. The high-riding Golf wagon will make its official debut at the Paris Motor Show next month.

Like the Passat Alltrack, the Golf Alltrack gets a 4MOTION all-wheel drive system, 20mm of additional ground clearance, wheel arch mouldings and flared side sills that offer body protection, new front and rear bumpers, door mirror caps painted in glossy “Reflex Silver”, “Silver” anodised roof rail and a set of fresh 17-inch “Valley” wheels.

Powering the crossover is one TSI and three TDI engines, all complying with the strict EU-6 emissions standard. For the first time in the Golf, Volkswagen is offering a 1.8-litre TSI with 132kW and 280Nm from a low 1,350rpm. It is matched with a 6-speed dual clutch transmission (DSG) as standard and will accomplish 100km/h from a standstill in 7.8 seconds while returning 6.8L/100km.

All three turbodiesel (TDI) engines come from the EA288 engine series. Despite their different engine displacements and power levels, they share several key technology modules, including emissions-relevant components such as the fuel injection system, turbocharger and intercooler within the induction module. A sophisticated exhaust gas recirculation system is also used. Also included are oxidation catalytic converter, diesel particulate filter and NOx storage catalytic converter.

The entry-level 1.6 TDI produces 81kW of power and 250Nm of torque between 1,500 and 3,000rpm and propels the Golf Alltrack from 0-100km/h in 12.1 seconds and consumes a claimed 4.7L/100km.

The 2.0 TDI has two levels of tune, one with 110kW, while the more powerful version gets 135kW. The less powerful version produces its maximum torque of 340Nm from 1,750 – 3,000rpm, which enables the Golf Alltrack to accelerate from 0-100km/h in 8.9 seconds. It returns a claimed fuel consumption of 4.9L/100km.

The 135kW 2.0 TDI is set to become the most powerful Golf wagon ever. Adapted from the Golf GTD, it delivers its maximum torque of 380Nm to the standard 6-speed DSG from a low 1,750rpm and maintains this value up to 3,250rpm. The car’s power and torque figures, along with its all-wheel drive system also enable trailer loads of up to 2,000kg (braked). 0-100km/h is done is 7.8 seconds while fuel economy is a claimed 5.1L/100km.

The Golf Alltrack is expected to go on sale in Australia by mid 2015.
