2015 Audi R8 to be lighter and more aggressively styled

While we know that Lamborghini is preparing the next iteration of the Gallardo, its twin under the skin, the Audi R8 is also expected to be replaced in 2015.

New reports have emerged that the next-generation R8 will retain similar proportions to the current car but embrace a more dynamic design and an evolution of Audi’s bold front grille. According to Auto Express, the new car will get matrix-beam LED lights and aggressive air intakes. The R8’s trademark side blades is also set to be shorter while at the back, it will get a Le Mans inspired “double diffuser”.

A current R8’s dated cabin is set for a major overhaul, with some sources suggesting it will get a digital instrument cluster, digital rear view mirror and updated MMI infotainment system.

Like the next-generation Gallardo, the new R8 is expected to carry over its current range of drivetrain, albeit tweaked for better performance and efficiency. These include a 4.2-litre V8 with around 335kW and a 5.2-litre V10 shared with the Gallardo with approximately 425kW.

Efficiency tech will play a significant role in bringing down fuel consumption, by as much as 10 per cent. These include engine stop/star and cylinder deactivation which are expected to be standard across the range.

The new platform is also set to be lighter, with carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) body panels, CFRP anti-roll bars and “glass fibre reinforced polymer suspension spring” contributing to the weight lost. Other lightweight measures include carbon ceramic brakes, titanium wheel hubs and a multi-material space frame that is reportedly 23 per cent carbon fibre.

Combined, these changes could see the 2015 Audi R8 weighing less than 1,500kg.
