Peugeot has officially unveiled its most powerful 308 GTi hot hatch yet, with up to 200kW on the higher spec version.

Power comes from a 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine developing 184kW on the base version 308 GTi 250, and 200kW on the GTi 270 range-topper. Both variants get the same 330Nm of torque sent to the front wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox.

Like the 308 range it is based on, the new Peugeot 308 GTi is much lighter than its predecessor, tipping the scales at just 1,205kg. This enables France’s latest hot hatch to blitz from 0-100km/h in 6.2 seconds in base spec, and 6.0 seconds in the more powerful version.

Peugeot claims the new model consumes just 6L/100km of fuel in the averaged combined cycle and emits just 139g/km of CO2, thanks to a stop&start system.

Compared to the standard model, the 308 GTi sits 11mm closer to the ground and gets an updated power steering system along with an ESP system that can be switched off completely and driver-adjustable chassis. The 308 GTi 270 is also equipped with a Torsen limited-slip differential to better harness the engine’s extra power.

Outside, the car can be distinguished by its glossed black front grille, chunky side skirts, gloss black rear diffuser and dual exhaust pipes. The base model gets 18-inch Diamant alloy wheels while the GTi 270 rolls on 19” Carbone 19 alloy wheels shod with Michelin Super Sport tyres. It also features 380mm ventilated disc clamped by red Peugeot Sport calipers at the front, and 268mm disc at the back.

There are a total of six colours available on the 308 GTi: Ultimate Red, Magnetic Blue, Perla Nera Black, Artense Grey, Pearlescent White and Hurricane Grey.

Peugeot Australia is currently in negotiations to secure the model for local showrooms.
