Toyota has announced a raft of tuning updates for the GR86 set to further improve the two-door rear drive sports car’s already dynamic handling characteristics.
The upgraded model is due to land in Australia in late 2024 alongside a Limited Edition GR86, with just 86 examples available, that features a unique Forest Shadow exterior colour, styling tweaks and upgraded suspension and brake package as standard.
The upgrades to the entire GR86 range include retuning of the dampers, electric power steering, and engine and throttle control which is said to deliver improved response and feel, especially for track days and motorsport activities.
Modifications to the GR86 include changes to the damper characteristics to deliver improved contact with the ground while the electric power steering has been retuned to provide intuitive handling and responsiveness with improved road feel.
Manual versions benefit from engine torque and throttle control changes, providing more direct responsiveness to accelerator pedal input. For automatic versions, the downshift algorithms have been tweaked to “enable sporty driving supported by a wider torque band”.
For those looking for an even higher performance GR86, the new Limited Edition is based on the range topping GR86 GTS and features standard fitment of the Dynamic Performance Pack that adds ZF Sachs sports dampers and Brembo brakes.
ZF Sachs dampers achieve linear damping characteristics in accordance with piston speed which promise to deliver comfort in everyday driving and agile handling in sports driving.
Stopping power has also been improved with red-painted Brembo four-piston calipers on the front and two-piston calipers on the rear, replacing the standard GTS’ two-piston front/single-piston rear setup.
Designed to stand out on the road, the GR86 Limited Edition is finished in an exclusive new Forest Shadow green colour that complements a set of unique 18-inch bronze alloy wheels. Inside, the cabin features unique black and tan Ultrasuede and leather-accented upholstery and trim.
Under the bonnet, the 2.4-litre horizontally-opposed four-cylinder engine remains unchanged and generates 174kW of power and 250Nm of torque. Drive to the rear wheels is through a choice of six-speed manual or automatic transmissions. Both variants feature a limited-slip Torsen rear differential.
Full specification and pricing will be announced closer to launch in late 2024.
