Volkswagen Budd-e concept headed for production

Volkswagen has confirmed its Budd-e concept, recently unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, will go into production.

Speaking to Car Magazine in the UK recently, VW’s Head of Electrical and Electronic Development, Dr Volkmar Tanneberger told the publication: “You will see a car that looks a lot like this, on the MEB platform, reach production.”

According to Tanneberger, the production Budd-e will reach showrooms around 2020.

It will ride on Volkswagen Group’s new Modular Electric Platform (MEB) that was designed specifically for plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles and uses a substantial 101 kWh battery and an electric motor at each axle. The setup is said to enable the modern day take on the Microbus to have an EV range of 600km and a top speed of 150km/h.
