The new BMW X4 crossover has been unveiled. Based on the X3, which itself is built on a 3 Series platform, the X4 adopts its coupé-like styling from the bigger X6. Viewed head-on, the high-riding crossover sports large air intakes in the bumper and headlights that merge with the BWM grille.
The car’s roofline reaches its highest point above the driver and the swoops down smoothly to the trailing edge of the tailgate. The signature swage line running along the flanks of BMW models is split into two on the X4. The first section rises dynamically from the front wheel arches to the rear door handles, while the second part draws the eye to the muscular sculpting of the rear wings. At the back, there are L-shaped LED taillights that are familiar from the new 3 Series and a faux rear diffuser. Overall, the X4 is 14mm longer and 36mm lower than the X3.
Inside, the driver and front passenger sit 20mm lower than in the BMW X3, while the “two-seat look” of the rear is said to accentuate the coupé character of the car.
Under the bonnet, six engine variants will be on offer, including:
- A 2.0-litre TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder diesel with 140kW (190HP) and 400Nm in the xDrive20d and returns an average 5.0L/100km and does 0-100km/h in 8.0 seconds;
- A 3.0-litre TwinPower Turbo six-cylinder diesel with 190kW (258HP) and 560Nm in the xDrive30d and returns an average 5.7L/100km and does 0-100km/h in 5.8 seconds;
- A 3.0-litre TwinPower Turbo six-cylinder diesel with 230kW (313HP) and 630Nm xDrive35d and returns an average 6.0L/100km and does 0-100km/h in 5.2 seconds;
- A 2.0-litre TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder petrol with 135kW (184HP) and 270Nm in the xDrive20i and returns an average 6.9L/100km and does 0-100km/h in 8.1 seconds.
- A 2.0-litre TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder petrol with 180kW (245HP) and 350Nm in the xDrive28i and returns an average 7.0L/100km and does 0-100km/h in 6.4 seconds.
- A 3.0-litre TwinPower Turbo six-cylinder petrol with 225kW (306HP) and 400Nm in the xDrive35i and returns an average 8.3L/100km and does 0-100km/h in 5.5 seconds.
All engines meet the stringent EU6 emission standard. A standard Auto Start Stop function and coasting function is also standard for engines paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox. Other fuel saving measures includes on-demand operation of ancillary units and low rolling-resistance tyres.
