Porsche Boxster range to get new flagship?

Here’s proof Porsche is readying a more powerful version of the Boxter. Caught in the wild undergoing winter testing, these spy photos show a possible new top model for the Boxster range.

The current Porsche Boxster lineup consists of a standard model powered by a 2.7-litre flat-six engine with 195kW, an ‘S’ model with a 3.4-litre engine producing 234kW, and a GTS variant with a higher output of the 3.4 flat-six developing 243kW. The new top dog is expected to wear to RS badge and will pump out at least 250kW, bringing the dash from standstill to 100km/h down to the mid fours.

With the sports convertible segment now made up of highly capable rivals such as the BMW Z4 sDrive35i, Audi TTRS and Jaguar F-Type Convertible, it’s no surprise Porsche felt it’s time to take on the competition with a hardcore Boxster.

The Boxster RS prototype sports larger air intakes, hinting that more cooling is required for the uprated powerplant. There is also a higher rear spoiler to keep turbulence in check.

The new Boxster RS is expected to be released in 2016.
