It’s all but confirmed that the next-generation BMW M5 will feature an all-wheel drive system for the first time when it arrives in late 2017, just like its rival the latest Mercedes-AMG E63.
However, that doesn’t mean you can’t go sideways in the new model, as it has emerged all the driver has to do is press a button in a certain driving mode to switch from AWD back to rear-wheel drive. The same function is available on the latest E63 by pulling the paddle shifters simultaneously.
While purists may lament at BMW’s and Merc’s decision to send power to all four wheels, the fact is AWD is better able to harness the super sedans’ full performance potential and with the added ability to switch between AWD and RWD easily, owners won’t have to sacrifice driving engagement, either.
The new M5 will continue to be powered by the carmaker’s biturbo 4.4-litre V8 engine tweaked to deliver around 460kW. It should enable the super sedan to rush from 0-100km/h below the 3.5-second mark.
