Next-gen BMW M5 could have AWD and be significantly lighter

The current-generation BMW M5 hasn’t been the sales success that BMW was hoping for. Speaking to German publication, Auto Motor und Sport recently, BMW M GmbH President, Friedrich Nitschke admitted the model is suffering – not due to the lack of power, but underwhelming driveability.

He said adding all-wheel drive on the next-generation M5 could well be the solution, but the company needs to take into account the extra weight and weight distribution on dynamics.

When asked how much lighter the next-generation is going to be, the M boss said their goal is to gain “significantly higher” weight savings than the weight savings of the BMW M4 coupe has over its predecessor, which is around 60kg.
