The all new Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class has been released into the fast growing premium compact SUV segment with a starting price of $47,900 for the GLA 200 CDI, putting it right in the ballpark of  the BMW X1 and Audi Q3.

The latest crossover from Stuttgart incorporates a new youthful, muscular coupé-inspired design in a compact package. Designed to offer serene day-to-day motoring and with off-road capabilities, this compact model fits perfectly into the urban lifestyle of younger buyers. It light-footedly masters all day-to-day challenges and is also robust enough for off-road excursions in the form of the GLA 250 4MATIC.

The GLA 200 CDI delivers a maximum output of 100kW and 300Nm of torque from the 2.2-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine, while returning an average fuel consumption figure of just 4.6L/100km (combined).

The GLA 250 4MATIC is the first Mercedes-Benz SUV to feature the new generation 4MATIC system and utilises a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder direct injection turbocharged engine to produce 155kW and 350Nm of torque. The mid spec model in the range consumes a respectable 7.0L/100km (combined).

In addition to the A 45 AMG and CLA 45 AMG, the Mercedes-Benz GLA 45 AMG is the third compact model to offer the world’s most powerful series production 4-cylinder turbocharged engine, delivering a V8 crushing 265kW of power and 450Nm of torque. The performance-oriented variable AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive system as standard provides improved traction and dynamic performance, accelerating the GLA 45 AMG from 0 – 100km/h in just 4.8 seconds.

The Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class features a host of features as standard on the range including 18” Wheels, Becker® MAP PILOT Navigation, an electronically operated EASY-PACK tailgate, THERMOTRONIC dual-zone climate control, Active Parking Assist and a reversing camera. In addition, the GLA 250 4MATIC incorporates Heated Electric Front Seats with Memory Function, Intelligent Light System, 19” Wheels and a Panoramic Electric Sunroof.

The range topping GLA 45 AMG sports 20” AMG Wheels, AMG Sports Suspension, AMG Night Package, AMG High-Performance Braking System, COMAND Navigation and a Harmon Kardon® Logic 7® surround sound system as standard.

The GLA-Class will also arrive with generous safety features as standard including Collision Prevention Assist, Blind Spot Assist, PRE-SAFE® accident anticipatory system, Attention Assist and Active Bonnet. The GLA 45 AMG will also include as standard Lane Keeping Assist, Distronic Plus, which is a more advanced version of adaptive cruise control that works even in stop-start traffic.

The new GLA-Class will be on sale in Australia from April 2014.
