Meet the most track-capable Chevrolet Camaro – the 2018 ZL1 1LE

This is the 2018 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE – the most track-capable and fastest Camaro ever!

Like the ZL1 it is based, the ZL1 1LE is propelled by the same 478kW supercharged LT4 V8 engine mated with a six-speed manual but beefed up with the 1LE package that includes racing-based suspension, exclusive Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar 3R summer-only tyres and an aero kit.

According to General Motors, the Camaro ZL1 1LE was three seconds faster than the standard ZL1 Coupe in preliminary testing around GM’s 4.7km Milford Road Course test track, thanks to the aero kit, adjustable suspension, wheels/tyres and reduced weight.

“The track-focused 1LE package offers progressive levels of performance across the Camaro lineup, from the V6 1LE to the SS 1LE. But with the new ZL1 1LE, the progression takes a quantum leap – this is the ultimate track-day Camaro,” said Camaro chief engineer, Al Oppenheiser.

Amongst the new aero package are a carbon fibre rear wing, specific air deflectors and dive planes on the front fascia that help push the car onto the road.

The ZL1 1LE also features race-derived, lightweight Multimatic DSSV (Dynamic Suspension Spool Valve) dampers. The front dampers allow the front ride height to be adjustable and are used with new, adjustable camber plates, while the rear stabilizer bar offers three-way adjustment. GM says all the components are designed for quick changes at the track and are just as easily returned to street settings.

The new, lightweight forged aluminium wheels are an inch wider but an inch smaller in diameter front and rear compared to the ZL1 wheels. Overall footprint has grown by around 10% over the ZL1. The Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar 3R shod wheel package also weighs approximately 3.3kg less per corner. Behind them hides Brembo brakes with red calipers complete with 1LE logo.

Further weight reduction comes courtesy of thinner rear glass and a fixed-back rear seat, helping shave 27kg compared to the ZL1 Coupe.
